William Lytlestone has been identified as a spy who worked in Spain for the government
of Queen Elizabeth; he sent several reports and letters to Lord Burghley.
Manuscript, on paper, in a single secretary hand, containing a copy of the intelligence
report on the military capabilities of Spain that William Lytlestone presented to
Valentine Dale in 1582. The report contains highly detailed information on the revenues,
military capabilities, and organization of the Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms.

Bound with: a presentation letter from William Walle to Sir Thomas Chichely, who is
addressed as Master-General of His Majesty's Ordinance. Walle states that the document
was "found amongst some of my father's papers." (Letter dates from 1670-1674.)
Annotated on back cover in a late seventeenth-century hand: "An Estimate of Spaine
by Sr. Walter Rawleigh."
