[Chronicle of England] : [ca. 1580]
51 p. ; 32 cm. x 21 cm.
Manuscript on paper in a secretary hand of a chronicle history of
England from William I through the Battle of Towton in the reign of Henry VI.
Each reign is described in brief chronological entries, which are labeled in
the left-hand margin in a more formal "print hand." The chapter on Richard I,
for example, contains entries explaining his nickname of "coeur-de-lion" and
his feats in Cyprus during the Third Crusade; his imprisonment and ransom;
and his pardoning of his brother John. The section ends by noting that
"in this Ks raigne were Robin Hood & litle John & 100 more Outlawes."
The author details the wars with Scotland and with France, and also
also takes a distinctly Protestant attitude toward several events in English
history, noting that Becket was supported "by the baser sort of clergy,"
commenting unfavorably on Papal attempts to assert authority over the Crown,
and calling the Peasants' Revolt "a grand rebellion excited by a Priest."
