Peter Lombard, Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland, Ad quaestiones
duodecim. Rome, Italy; ca. 1601. Paper; 12 ff. (manuscript foliated);
279 x 210 mm.; 1 column, 34 lines.
I (12). Catchwords on every page.
Italic script. Large initials in black ink on title page. Unbound.
From Sir Thomas Phillipps MS. 5236, Vite di Philippo Strozzi (Lot
No. 141, vol. 17 in the sale of Lord Guildford's MSS.)
Comments: The manuscript presents the response of Pope Clement
VIII (1592-1605), prepared by Lombard, to twelve questions proposed by
Catholic priests who had been incarcerated in the town of Wisbeach,
Cambridgeshire. The twelve questions consider the legitimacy of the
powers of the King of England and the Pope in temporal and religious
affairs and whether the king may be rightfully deposed or killed.
