Cheshire Documents. Cheshire, England; 13th-16th century.
Parchment.
The following is a summary of the contents of the first 15
documents:
1) Quitclaim by Sir Hugh de Venables to William de Venables of
"Neubold" (Newbold Astbury in Cheshire) of rents, etc., in Newbold.
Dated at "Kyndirton" (Kinderton in Middlewich, Cheshire), Thursday
before the feast of the Translation of St. Thomas in the 13th year of
the reign of Edward I (5 July 1285). In Latin.
2) Quitclaim by Sir Hugh de Venables to Simon (Caysi?), Chaplain, of
all claims in a lawsuit against William de (Wern?). Dated at "Medium
Wicum" (Middlewich in Cheshire), Thursday before the feast of St. James
the Apostle in the 4th year of the reign of Edward II (23 July 1310).

3) Grant by Robert, rector of the church of "Aschton" (Aston juxta
Mondrum in Cheshire?) to William, son of Adam de Sale, of lands in
"Aedeford in lethe" and "Aedefordewoperdone." Dated at "Aedeford"
Wednesday after the feast of St. Nicholas in the 20th year of the reign
of Edward II (10 December 1326). In Latin.
4) Indenture between Mabel, widow of Richard Bron of "Styale" (Styal in
Cheshire) on one part and Thomas Emmesone and John his son on the
other, attesting that Mabel had granted John lands in "Styale" for the
term of her life and defining the terms of his tenure of the land.
Dated at "Styale" on the Monday after Christmas in the 13th year of the
reign of Edward III (27 December 1340). In French.
5) Grant by Sir Walter de Cokeseye to Thomas de Swetenham of an annuity
of 20s for the rest of his life in recognition of his "advice and aid
within the county of Chester." Dated at "Pectorton" (Peckforton in
Cheshire) on the Thursday before Michaelmas in the 47th year of the
reign of Edward III (22 September 1373). In Latin.
6) Grant by Nicholas de Haselynton, chaplain, to Richard, son of Roger
de Chelmundelegh, and Alice, Richard's wife, the daughter of Richard de
Henhull, of lands in "Wico Malbo" (Nantwich in Cheshire), "Aston juxta
Worleston" (Aston juxta Mondum in Cheshire), "Brundelegh" (Broad lane
in Cheshire), and "Laurthyn in Fadilegh" (Lardon Green in Cheshire).
Dated at Nantwich on Thursday the feast of St. Matthew (20 September),
1372 or 1376? In Latin.
7) Indenture of Hugh de Venable of "Kynderton" (Kinderton in
Middlewich, Cheshire), Sir William de Chetewyn, Henry de Delvea, John
de Frodesham, and Robert de Caton on one hand and Richard de Bromley,
clerk, and Roger de Wirley on the other, defining the terms of an
obligation to pay a certain sum of money. Dated at "Lich" (Leek in
Staffordshire?) on Tuesday, the feast of St. Chad, in the 1st year of
the reign of Richard II (2 March 1378). In Latin.
8) Quitclaim by William de Rixton, John de Rixton, Nicholas de Rixton,
Gilbert de Rixton, and Simon de Byrum to Henry de Sale of lands in
"Bedeford" (Bedford). Dated 10th October in the 14th year of the reign
of Richard II (1390). In Latin.
9) Grant by Joanna, daughter of John de Ardern, to Nicholas de Bolde,
her brother, of lands in "Netherderwynt." Dated on the Friday after
Michaelmas in the 10th year of the reign of Henry IV (5 October 1408).

10) Grant by Alice, widow of Roger de Barton, to Ralph, her son, of
lands in "Irwilham" within Barton in Lancashire and in "Westeley"
(Westleigh), also in Lancashire. Dated at "Irwilham" on Friday, the
feast of the Beheading of Jonh the Baptist in the 5th year of the reign
of Henry VI (29 August 1427). In Latin.
11) Indenture between Richard of Radclyff, parson of "Wylmyslawe"
(Wilmslow in Cheshire) and John of Curbecchley of "Styall" (Styal in
Cheshire) defining the terms of the payment of some rent. Dated at
"Wylmyslawe" on 21 November in the 10th year of the reign of Henry VI
(1431). In English.
12) Indenture between Thomas Burton and John Curteys concerning land in
"Wynterborn Chirborgh." Michaelmas in the 1st year of the reign of
Edward V (29 September 1483). In Latin.
13) Bond whereby Thomas Curbychley and Richard Fyton are obliged to pay
William Brigge 40 pounds, subject to the conditions stated on the back,
which relate to arbitration in a lawsuit. 5 September in the 11th year
of the reign of Henry VII (1495). In Latin and English.
14) Grant by Sir Richard Bagenall of "Dewlenses" in Staffordshire to
Thomas Yeatton of land in the parish of "Leeke" (Leek) in
Staffordshire. 7 June in the 6th year of the reign of Elizabeth I
(1564). In Latin.
15) Recognizance recording debt of 1000 pounds owed by Henry Pownall
senior of "Pownall" or "Hathorne" in the parish of "Wilmeslowe"
(Wilmslow) in Cheshire and Edmund his son to George Latham. 4 January
in the 41st year of the reign of Elizabeth I (1599). In Latin.
The 15 documents described above were purchased from Sotheby's 24
June 1986, (Lot 43). 43 additional documents were purchased from
Sotheby's 22 June 1982 by Sir A. Wagner. Purchased by the Osborn
collection in October, 1986.
Comments: Osborn fa25 contains 58 documents concerning the
regions around Cheshire, including charters, indentures, quitclaims,
conveyances, etc. dating from c. 1200 to 1599. The script and size of
the documents vary; they are all written on parchment and most preserve
seals.
