Don Biud de Haro, Anatomie of Spayne, composed in the Castilian
tonge by Don Biud De Haro, Anno 1598, Translated into Englishe by Harye
Bedwod, gent. England; 1599 (Date on title page). Paper, watermark of
Crest with lions rampant and tower similar to Bricquet 1477 (Breme,
1594), yet the one in the manuscript has a descender with a four-shape
and then the initials WR; 62 ff. (Manuscript paginated); 348 x 232 mm.;
1 column, 45-55 lines. Ruled in red ink.

Cursive script. This manuscript contains family trees of noble
houses, which include the coat of arms of each members, totally over
400 detailed color illustrations. On page 28, there are several trees
which bear the names of nobles according to their descent. Out of these
names extend hands which either clasp with those who are their allies,
or hold swords which cross with those held by their enemies. The title
page has a border enclosing the title, in which are eight pedestals
each bearing a crest and an inscription at the base: Feare, Suspicion,
Usurpacion, Hipochresie, Perjurie, Tiranie, Murther, and Bastardie. At
the end of the manuscript is a peacock with the 25 shields of the
houses described within the eyes of the feathers. He holds the motto "A
Tuerto O A Derecho Nuestra Casa Hasta El Techo" which translates
roughly "By right or by wrong, or as chance directs our house to the
roof." Bound in contemporary calf with gilt tooling on front and back,
with remains of green silk closing ties.

1789." Armorial Bookplate on back of title page of "Francis Gwyn of
Lansmor in the County of Glamorgan and of Ford Abbey in the County of
Devon, Esq. 1698." The title page has the name Don Miguel. Bernard
Quaritch Catalogue 11, no. 713. Bequest of James M. Osborn in 1976.
Comments: In the margin of the text, the scribe has added the
sources for the section, as well as noting the subject discussed. The
Columbia University Rare Book Library contains notes by Edwin Knowles
(d. 1967) who was preparing and edition of the manuscript before his
death.
