Manuscript on paper in a single Italic hand of a treatise on the
compatibility of the science of medicine with belief in Christianity and a
vindication of Galen against four traditional attacks on him, including the
"calumnies" that Galen favored reason over religion and that he scoffed at both
Judaism and Christianity. Trippe frequently alludes to and quotes other
medical and scientific authors in developing his argument, including
Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Nicander, Avicenna, and his contemporaries Antonio
Guainerio, Jean Fernel, Pietro Andreas Mattioli, and Leonhard Fuchs, as well
as the humanist thinkers Henry Cornelius Agrippa, Guillaume Bude, and Ramus
(Pierre de la Ramee).
Text prefaced (p. 5-7) by a dedicatory epistle to Robert Dudley, Earl of
Leicester, who was Chancellor of Oxford and from whom Trippe was soliciting
recommendation for appointment as Physician of Corpus Christi.
Pages are ruled in red; marginal annotations in the same hand in the
marginal compartments.
