The Triumphe of our Saviour Jesus Christe (English devotional
poem). England; fourth quarter, sixteenth century. Paper, with several
watermarks of pots, including Bricquet 12793 (Bayonne, 1583). 138 ff.
(The manuscript is foliated in the top right corner, starting on f. 18
and continuing to 170). 200 x 145 mm. 1 column, 30 lines (three 10-line
stanzas).
I (4, -1), II-III (4), IV (4, -1-2), V-XIII (4), XIV (4, -3-4),
XV-XVII (4), XVIII (4, -1), XIX-XIV (4), XXV (6), XXVI-XXVII (8),
XXVIII (4), XXIX-XXX (8), XXXI (8, -7-8). Several quires are missing
from the beginning and the end. Catchwords on every page; Quire marks
on quires II-III: g-h; V-XIV: i-s; XIX-XXIV: t-z.
Cursive bookhand. Bound in original limp vellum, cut away except
for spine.
On f. 42r is the signature of Richard Phillips Jones, M.D. On 53r
is the signature of Jones Jones of Bala, 1815 (the famous Welsh
antiquary and literary historian), which reads "John Jones Bala
Meirionydd Sydd yn gwneuthur rhodd o hwn I Lyfr gell Ysgoldy Iesu
Chwefror 10fed 1815 wedi ei gael gerllaw y Bala gan hen offeiriad." On
56v, "John Plimly his Booke." On 57r, "Mary Mall, 1660." Purchased from
Percy J. Dobell in 1938. Bequest of James M. Osborn, 1976.
