Henry Blaxton, 2 holograph poems, one on the defeat of the Spanish
Armada. England; ca. 1588. Paper. The poems occur on one blank folio in
a printed Bible (Bishops' version) after the Book of Malachai. 205 x
150 mm. 1 column, 28 lines.
Cursive script.
The Bible was owned by the Blaxton family in the late sixteenth
century. On various pages are the signatures of Elizabeth and Joan,
daughter of Godfri. Also the name Digory Gordye?, 1670 and 1672,
appears throughout. On the page following the poems are the birth
records of Elizabeth (1689; died 1692) and Thomas Kastell (Feb. 1691;
died March 1691), the children of Thomas Kastell. Afterwards is the
signature of "Thomas Kastell His Book, given to him by his uncle who
died the 20th of Oct. 1729."
Comments: The two poems are written on both sides of a blank page in a
Bible, Bishops' version, printed by R. Jugge, 1575. The poem on the
Spanish Armada has been transcribed, printed, and pasted down on the
first flyleaf.
