          John Lydgate, 1370?-1451?, The Kings of England Sithen William the
     Conqueror (Middle English poem; a roll). England; last quarter of the
     15th century. Parchment; 130 x 1900 mm.; 1 column.

          Purchased from Myers in 1961. Bequest of James M. Osborn in 1976.

          Comments: This roll contains a poem chronicling the reigns of the
     Kings of England beginning with William, duke of Normandy and
     continuing to the reign of Henry VI (1422-61, 1470-71). The poem is a
     later redaction of Lydgate's "The Kings of England Sithen William the
     Conqueror." Each king has his own stanza ranging from 8 to 16 lines
     (the longest concerning Henry V) which presents the major events of the
     reign, his marriage and his burial place, except for the last which
     tells only of the crowing of Henry VI in Westminster and in Paris. At
     the end is the "Title of France" which concerns King Philip of France
     and King Edward. The original poem and this redaction is printed by
     McCracken, EETS 192, pp. 717-712.
