L'arithmetica si divide in due parti, l'una per theorica, et l'altra per
prattica; pero volendo io 
trattare solo della prattica, lasciaro da parte la theorica, la quale considera solo le ragioni, cause, 
sostanze e qualita, e la prattica risguarda le attioni e calculationi delle cose, che sono in atto 
proprio. Onde per maggior chiarezza la divideremo in cinque atti, li quali sono numerare, 
summare, sottrare, multiplicare e partire, cosi di numeri sani come de rotti ...

Paper, ff.  XI + 26 + III, 215 x 160 mm. In-4ø folding. Thick paper with watermark: shield with 
kneeling man holding cross?? Similar to Briquet 7629?? Many blank pages. Pages slightly 
damaged by the acidity of the ink. The foliation skips a leaf between ff. 4 and 5.

I-II 16 (8 fly-leaves + ff. 1-23); III 4 (-4?, ff. 24-26).

No ruling; written in one column.

A few geometrical figures.

Original limp parchment binding, a large circle traced with a sharp pencil on the front cover, a  
group of small circles in the form of a cross on the rear cover. At the top left corner of the front 
cover a paper label with the s. XVI/XVII inscription in Humanistica Cursiva: "Mathematicorum. 
Anonymi arithmetica manu scripta linguae Italicae". On the spine is written in the same type of 
script "Aritmetica" and, at the top,  the letter "A".

The Giovanni Battista Conti from Milan, who signs at the end, is more probably an early owner 
than the author of this treatise, as Laurence Witten assumed. From the Auersperg Collection 
(inscription on the front pastedown: "Wolffgangi Engelberti Sacri Romani Imperii Comitis ab 
Aursperg Sup. Cap. Car. Catalogo inscriptus anno 1656"). Collection of A.R.A. Hobson, 
London. Purchased from Laurence Witten on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund.
