f. 138r [O]mnis qui petit accipit (Matt. 7:8) : Herbordus de Bergamo OP (d. 1272), Schneyer, v.
2, p. 687, 73.
Paper, ff. 138, 225 x 150 mm. Thick paper with heavy chain lines, 4ø folding. Watermarks: ....
The foliation is erroneous: the partially remaining leaf after f. 29 [= f. 29 bis] is not foliated and
after "58" follows "60". The quires are strengthened by means of parchment stays cut from a
liturgical manuscript with neumes (s. XI?, quires I-VI) and from a scholastic manuscript (quires
VII-XII). First and last leaves damaged.
I-II 10 (ff. 1-20), III 10 (the last leaf, unfoliated, is largely cut away without loss of text, ff. 21-
29), IV-IX 12 (ff. 30-102), X 16 (ff. 103-118), XI 12 (ff. 119-130), XII 8 (ff. 131-138). Three sets
of quire-marks on the first page of the quires: (1) red Roman numerals "I"-"XII" in the middle of
the upper margin; (2) Arabic numerals s. XV "1"-"12" in the middle of the lower margin; (3) in
quires V-X only (ff. 42-118) , from "Primus" to "VIus", in the middle of the lower margin.
Ruling in brown ink, for one column on ff. 1r-17r and 54r (quire VI)-138v, for two columns on
ff. 17v-53v; 26-33 lines. Full pricking in the outer margins is visible in quires I and IV. In quires
I, II and IV often full ruling, the horizontal lines not following the pricking; otherwise frame
rulling.
Copied by various hands all writing Gothica Cursiva Antiquior Currens. Scribes in quires I-V
often make remarkable extensions to majuscules or ascenders on the first line, decorated with
foliage or grotesque heads.
Headings, heightening of majuscules and plain initials in red applied very irregularly and totally
missing on ff. 26v-29v, 30v-118v, 119v-130v and 135v-138v. Some 2- or 3-line initials of coarse
execution, with or without guide-letters; most initials are not executed.
Damaged original limp parchment binding with flap, made from several pieces of parchment
sewn together by means of parchment strips. The sewing runs through the spine and is gathered
in decorative patterns over two strips of heavy leather.
On the inside of the front cover the name "Choradus" (s. XIV/XV) is written. Collection of
Count Wolfgang Engelberg von Auersperg. The paper label on the spine, with the number 186, is
typical of this library. Purchased from Laurence Witten on the Edwin J. Beinecke Fund, Oct.
1984.
