Parchment, ff. II (paper) + 177 + II (paper), 145 x 110 mm. Next to the foliation, the manuscript
has a partial early pagination "1"-"258" (= ff. 1r-129r). Many pages badly damaged and faded,
especially f. 1r.
I-XXII 8 (ff. 1-176), XXIII (a singleton, f. 177). Signatures of the type "a1"-"a4", from "a" to
"y". Late quire-marks "1"-"6" are written at left in the lower margin of the first page of quires
XVIII-XXIII (ff. 137-177), i.e. the quires without pagination.
Ruled for one column, 36 lines traced in lead. Normally 6 staves of 4 lines traced in red ink over
the lead lines, the text underneath being written between two lines. If there is no music there are
18 lines of text (double ruling).; c. 125 x c. 86 mm. Width of the staves: 12 mm.
Copied by one hand in Northern Gothica Textualis Formata. Rubrics in Gothica Hybrida Formata
(Bastarda). Music notation in Nota Quadrata.
Red rubrics. Heightening of majuscules in yellow. Alternately red and blue1-line plain initials on
ff. 176r-177r. Flourished initials (height: 1 stave + 1 text line) alternately red with purple
penwork and blue with red penwork. Cadels (same size) in a rectangular frame decorated with
foliage on a yellow background. On f. 1r damaged large golden initial (2 staves + 2 lines of text)
on a blue background containing coat of arms of Hugo Gontard (see below).
Binding s. XIX: marbled leather over cardboard, repaired. Gold-tooled spine with title on red
leather label: "LIVRE D'HEURES". Brown marbled paper endpapers.
At the bottom of f. 177r is the contemporary note in Gothica Hybrida Formata "Pro ecclesia
sancti Genesii Claromontensis de dono domini Hugonis Gontard abbatis dicte ecclesie". Hugo
Gontard was a canon in the collegiate church of St. Genesius (St. Genez) at Clermont-Ferrand in
1515 and "abbot" of the said church 1519-1545; see Gallia Christiana, v. 2 (Paris, 1720), 319.
On the front fly-leaf recto (1) a s. XVIII/XIX note "Paucillum amici memento. [signed]
Herry***"; (2) a note in French on this manuscript, signed "Keller 1842"; (3) a typewritten
bookseller's description in German, with the number 723. Sold in 1865 by Musikantiquariat
Walter Ricke at Munich. On the front pastedown armorial bookplate with the device "Imitare
quam invidere" of the Albert H. Childs, Yale '61, Memorial Collection at Yale University
Library, with the number "Ms. 2". [But would have been offered for sale by Michel Huglo in
1982].
