Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun, Roman de la rose, E. Langlois, ed.,
Societ‚ des Anciens
Textes Francais, 5 vols. (Paris, 1914-1924); F. Lecoy, ed., Les Classiques
Francais du Moyen
Age, 3 vols. (Paris, 1965-1970). This manuscript not mentioned in E. Langlois, Les manuscrits du
Roman de la rose. Description et classement. Travaux et Memoires de
l'Universite de Lille, N.S.
I, v. 7 (Lille, Paris, 1910) nor in the supplement in Langlois's edition. In the margin of f. 56v
there is a note in French s. XVIII stating that there begins a considerable text part not found in
other manuscripts. Indeed, between verses 6844 and 6845 our manuscript has a long
interpolation, beginning on f. 56va, line 24 "Encor te vueil je monstrer, / Ce dit Raison, et
ministrer" and ending f. 59ra, line 28 "Tout ce t'ay je retrait pour toy. / Je te deprie, repens toy".
It deals with the heroes of the Troian War, Alexander the Great and the history of Julius Caesar.
Again, between verses 6870 and 6871 there is on f. 59rb, lines 23-28 an interpolation beginning
"Nulle autre chose me demant" and ending "Et tenir te fait pour aveugle".
Parchment and paper, ff. III + 176 , 280 x 210 mm. The three front fly-leaves and the outer and
inner bifoliums of the quires are parchment. In-folio folding. Watermark??
I-XI 16. There are a few traces of signatures in the lower corner of the recto of the leaves, of the
type "a1" - "a8" followed by "+".
The entire manuscript, including the fly-leaves and the parchment pastedowns, is pricked in the
upper, outer and lower margins and ruled with pink ink for two columns of 33 lines below top
line, 180/182 x 146/147 mm., intercolumnar space 18 mm. The last prick in the outer margin is
double and the ruling type is 43.
The main text (art. 4) is copied by Durand Abraham at Rouen in 1462 in Gothica Semihybrida
Libraria (Bastarda). The scribe is wrongly called Abraham Durand and the date is misread as
1457 in Colophons 49 after Bradley, v. 1, pp. 297-298. Art. 1 is written by an unknown scribe in
Gothica Semihybrida Libraria (Bastarda). Artt. 2-3 are written in Gothica Cursiva Formata
(Bastarda) by the scribe's son Pierre Abraham, the same hand as wrote the ownership inscription
after the colophon on f. 174v.
Headings in red. The first letters of each verse are heightened in yellow. 2-line flourished initials
alternately in red with blue penwork and blue with red penwwork. The text opens with a 4-line
foliate initial on f. 1r. On the same page full acanthus border and at the top an arch-topped
miniature 2 columns wide framed in gold. All the other miniatures are rectangular, have the
width of 1 column and are framed in gold.
