It has not been possible to locate a printed text of this work nor
is it mentioned by J. E. Harting, Bibliotheca accipitraria (London,
1891).
3. back pastedown: Recepta dela stizza di cani In primis. Vno
bichiero de olio da mangiare...e uolse menare intorno Vn poco. At
bottom of leaf, enclosed in a rectangle, is a short Greek passage
transliterated into Roman letters, by the same notarial hand
responsible for the final line on f. 58v
Parchment, ff. 64 (foliated i-iv, 1-60, with 60 as back
pastedown), 302 x 202 (223 x 159) mm. Written in 2 columns of 30 lines,
table of contents in 30 long lines; single vertical bounding lines.
Ruled in lead; remains of prickings in upper and lower margins.
I-II^^2, III-IX^^8, X^^4 (4 = pastedown). Catchwords in middle of
lower margin on verso; signed with arabic numbers in same location, on
recto.
Written by a single person in large, ungainly round gothic
bookhand.
Numerous initials of poor quality, 7- to 2-line, in blue with red
penwork designs and borders. Rubrics throughout; paragraph marks and
initial strokes in red or blue.
Lower portion of f. 58 trimmed.
Binding: s. xvi-xvii. Wound resewing on three tawed supports.
Beaded, colored endbands sewn on tawed cores which extend onto corners
of pasteboards. The spine is square, with a paper lining all along.
Covered in goatskin, originally black, now brown blind-tooled with
concentric borders, the center panel filled in. Four fastenings of
tawed skin. Cover coming loose from bookblock.
Written in Italy (perhaps in Northeastern Italy) at the end of the
14th or beginning of the 15th century (author's copy?); early
provenance included one scholar familiar with Greek (see art. 3).
Inscription on back pastedown, s. xv, now mostly illegible begins "Ego
Ioannes...". Belonged to Prince Alexander Dietrichstein at Schloss
Nikolsburg; his sale (Lucerne, Nov. 1933, no. 703; Pl. 38, f. 58v).
From the collection of C. F. G. R. Schwerdt (see catalogue Hunting
Hawking Shooting [London, 1928] v. 4, p. 115, with colored folding
plate of ff. 1r and 58v); his sale (London, 12 March 1946, no. 2187).
Acquired from Goldschmidt's by David Wagstaff; gift of Mrs. David
Wagstaff in 1952.
