desideria...Anselmus Item uindicta. Tradidit deus ideo
dicit quia nichil absque eius permissione fit...per quod
uernaculo hebreorum sermone uera et fidelia esse que scripta
sunt ostendit. Explicit epistola ad Romanos.
Robert of Bridlington, Catena on Romans, begins imperfectly
at 1. 24; Stegmueller, v. 5, no. 7382; missing Romans 9.17-21 (and
portions of 9.16, 22).
2. ff. 51r-71v Incipit epistola prima ad corinthios cuius
argumentum. l. abbreuiatio talis est. Ieronimus. Corinthij
sunt achaici. Et hij similiter ab apostolo sunt conuersi
sed...id est confirmare que predicta sunt nisi intellexerit

Parchment, ff. ii (parchment) + i (paper: title page) +
i (parchment) + 96 + i (parchment), 350 x 239 (268 x 181) mm.
Written in two columns of 47 lines; widely spaced double
upper and lower horizontal bounding lines, full across;
double outer and single inner vertical bounding lines, with
additional ruling between columns and at top of folio for
running titles. Ruled in crayon; prickings prominent in all
margins.
I^^4 (-1, 2; beginning of text lost), II-IV^^8, V^^8 (-2),
VI^^8, VII^^8 ( + 1 leaf after 7, f. 49), VIII-IX^^8, X^^8 (-1, 2,
3, before f. 67), XI-XIII^^8 ( + 1 at end). Single signature
(.I.) on f. 2v.
Written in a neat gothic bookhand by three scribes.
Scribe 1: ff. 1r-2v; 2: 3r-22v, 51r-71v; 3: ff. 22v-50v, 72r-
96v.
Large elegant initial, 26-line, in red penwork, on f.
72r; smaller similar initial, 16-line, in green with red
highlights, also on f. 72r; simple decorative letters, 14-
and 6-line, green and red respectively, on f. 51r. Quotations
from Bible and marginal notes referring to authors cited, in
red. Modern illuminated title page inserted as f. iii:
"Catena Commentariorum S. S. Patrum, in Epistolis ad Romanos
et Corinthios. M. S. Saeculi XIV".
Binding: s. xix. Pink calf with large bosses (different
on upper and lower covers) and strap-and-pin fastening.
Blind-tooled.
Written in England in the second half of the 12th
century; early provenance unknown. Inscription of the 18th
century [?] on f. 25v: "Alexr Campbell Bookseller Carlisle".
Bequeathed in 1896 by Adam Watters "Merchant Grocer" of
Quebec to his son, Frank S. Watters (autograph note of the
latter in library files). Purchased by Henry Fletcher from
Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles; his gift to Yale in 1950.
