1. ff. 1r-30r Incipit tractatus primus de rethorica [sic] huius
artis continens Capitula xiij. Capitulum primum de genere uolatilium et
moribus eorum. Generum uolatilium uiuencium de rapina quibus utitur
gens aucupando...uapor ad ipsam et sudor et quando sudabit omnes
pediculi cadent. Explicit tercius tractatus libri falconarie magistri
oxamini arabiti.
This treatise by Moamin (Oxaminus may be a variation of his name)
is divided into three sections, all on falconry; the second and third
are preceded by lists of chapters. Missing is the prologue. The fourth
section appears later in the volume (see art. 6). For the manuscript
tradition: H. Tjernard, Moamin et Ghatrif (Stockholm, 1945); Beinecke
MS 127 is no. 22 on p. 4.

accidentalibus canum et rapacium quadrupedum. Continens. vi.

professores sufficienter non tractauerunt de canibus...de fece ferri

Parchment, ff. i (original parchment flyleaf) + i (paper tipped
in) + 76, 195 x 128 (143 x 87) mm. Written in 31 long lines; single
vertical and double upper horizontal bounding lines full across. Ruled
in lead; remains of prickings in all margins except inner.
I-II^^8, III^^6, IV-VIII^^8, IX^^6, X^^8. Catchwords (Scribe 1 only)
decorated with lines and flourishes (some in red) along lower edge.
Written in a small round gothic bookhand by two scribes. Scribe 1:
ff. 1r-37v, 67v-75v; Scribe 2: ff. 39r-67r.
One 6-line initial, red and blue, filled with red and blue penwork
in a floral pattern. 4-, 2-, and 1-line pen initials, red, with long
trailing serifs and blue calligraphic flourishes. 2- and 1-line
initials outside text column. On f. 1r, arms of the duchy of Austria
(crudely executed; later addition?):, or, two eagles palewise
displayed and crowned sable (Hungary): impaled with barry of 6 gules and
argent; supported by griffins passant gules; the whole set between thick
pink bands. Line-fillers red undulating lines. Rubrics throughout.
Binding: s. xvi. Sewn on three supports, the two outer ones
leather, the central one tawed skin, laid and nailed in channels in
wooden boards. Plain wound primary endbands sewn on a tawed core at the
head and a leather one at the tail, laid in grooves and nailed, with a
secondary embroidery added. The square spine is lined with vellum
between supports. Covered in dark red goatskin, blind-tooled, with four
brass catches on the lower board. Leather cracking along joints, clasps
wanting.
Written in Italy in the 14th century; the arms of the Duchy of
Austria appear to be a later addition. Unidentified shelf-mark on f.
1r: "T/ 175". Belonged to C. F. G. R. Schwerdt (bookplate; see the
catalogue Hunting Hawking Shooting [London, 1928] v. 2, pp. 349-50);
his sale (Sotheby's, 12 March 1946, no. 2241) presumably to David
Wagstaff (bookplate); gift of Mrs. David Wagstaff in 1946.
