Manuscript leaves, on parchment, from a small-format Gradual. It opens with 14 leaves
from the Temporale, 4-22 Sundays after Pentecost; 5 leaves from the Sanctorale, containing
chants for a feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the dedication of St. Michael, the
firth of St. Francis, All Saints Day and St. Clement; 25 leaves from the Common of
the Saints; and 7 leaves from the Kyriale. The final 3 leaves contain later additions.
The music consists of square notation on a four-line stave.
Ex libris Arthur and Charlotte Vershbow. Purchased from Christie's (New York sale,
2013 April 9-10, lot 198) on the Albert H. Childs Fund, 2013.
Laid in: one leaf from a 13th century Italian manuscript of Platearius, Circa instans,
on parchment. Double columns of 33 lines each, initials in alternating red and blue.
Possibly a pastedown from the original binding of the gradual.
Layout: single columns containing eight lines of music of square notation on a four-line
stave.
Script: gothic book hand.
Decoration: rubricated. Small initials in red or blue ink with opposite-color flourishing.
Binding: nineteenth-century quarter calf.
