Manuscript, in several hands, on parchment, with three inserted paper leaves containing
a chapter index, containing Gregory I's Dialogi de vita, in four books, and Saint
Bonaventure's Legenda minor and Legenda maior detailing the life of Saint Francis
of Assisi.
Ex libris F.R.C. Ex libris Wigan Public Library. Purchased from Bernard Quaritch,
Ltd. (Bonham's sale of Early Printing and English Books to 1640, London 2012 October
2, lot 111) on the Frederick W. Liebert Fund, 2012.
Script: Southern Semi-Textualis Libraria. Brown ink, with slightly later additions
in black ink.
Decoration: five illuminated initials introducing each book, with figurated extensions
containing portrait medallions in the lower margins. Rubricated with initials in red
and blue pen throughout.
Binding: late 14th or early 15th century. Full brown calf over wooden boards, blind-tooled
with geometric lines in diamond pattern with four small round stamps at the corners
of each board, each containing a shield. Five-compartment spine (some loss on spine);
first and final flyleaves most likely originally served as pastedowns.
