Copy of an account book for the hunting expenses of King Charles
VI of France. The account is rendered by Philippe de Courguilleroy [?]
"chevalier maistre veneur du Roy et maistre de ses canes et forestz"
and encompasses November 1395 to 2 February 1396.
Parchment (crude), ff. ii (paper) + 8 + ii (paper partially stuck
together), 339 x 290 (257 x 180) mm. Written in 44 long lines, ruled in
lead. Format varies.
Composed of 8 individual sheets.
Written in a chancery script by a single scribe.
Binding: s. xviii-xix. Brown mottled and spattered calf with a red
label, gold-tooled.
Written in France in 1396. Belonged to Sir Thomas Phillipps (no.
4365; inscription on f. 1r, mutilated tag on spine) who acquired it
from the bookdealer Royez in Paris. C. F. G. R. Schwerdt (bookplate;
see the catalogue Hunting Hawking Shooting [London, 1928] v. 2, p.
319); his sale (Sotheby's, 12 March 1946, no. 2191). Purchased from
Goldschmidt's by David Wagstaff (bookplate); gift of Mrs. David
Wagstaff in 1946.
