conuersum cognomine. corde benignum. de quadam auium significacione
mistica et morali. Et primo de simplicitate. Cum scribere illiterato
debeam non miretur diligens lectorum si ad...Qui enim sapientem verbis
instruit. quasi pleno vasculo latices infundit. [text:] De simplicitate
columbe. Capitulum primum. Si dormiatis inter medios cleros, penne
columbe de argentate et posteriora dorsi ejus in pallore auri. In
scriptura sacra frater tres columbas legendo reperi...id est mutacio
eorum non sinit homines crescere [?] in virtute. Expliciunt moralitates
de auibus. deo gracias.
2. ff. 13r-14r Incipit tabula de moralitatibus auium. Primum
capitulum istius operis est de simplicitate...vel de hominibus lucem
veritatis odientibus. Explicit tabula de moralitatibus auium.
3. f. 14v Incipiunt moralitates de piscibus. Capitulum primum. Est
belua in mari que dicitur grece aspis chelone...ut putaretur infernum
esse. dicente ipso iona propheta. Exaudiuit me de ventre inferi.

4. f. 14v Incipit tabula de piscibus. Primum capitulum est de
belua...et de natura eiusdem. moralitas de illis qui sunt modice fidei.
5. ff. 14v-16r Incipiunt moralitates de lapidibus. Sunt lapides
igniferi in quodam monte orientis quos greci vocant cheroboles...nobis
concedat qui sine fine vivit et regnat. Expliciunt moralitates de
lapidibus. deo gracias.
6. f. 16v Incipit tabula de lapidibus. Primum capitulum de lapidibus
est de cherobolibus...moralitas de beata maria virgine. Explicit tabula
de moralitatibus lapidum. deo gracias.
This work is often attributed to Hugh of St. Victor in
manuscripts; it is printed with his works in PL 177. 13-164, without
tables, and the order of the individual sections varies considerably
from that in this manuscript (see R. Goy, Die Ueberlieferung der Werke
Hugo von St. Viktor [Stuttgart, 1976] pp. 491-92).
Parchment, ff. ii (paper) + 16 + ii (paper), 237 x 180 (176 x 115)
mm. Written in 2 columns, 46 lines, ruled in lead; single bounding
lines, full across; prickings at top, bottom, and in inner margin, for
bounding lines only.
I-II^^8. Catchwords for first gathering (enclosed in red
rectangle), located in center of lower margin on verso.
Written by a single scribe in gothic bookhand; many abbreviations.
Painted initial at beginning of prologue in blue, brown, pale
yellow, green, and orange; smaller initials in red or blue with penwork
designs. Paragraph marks in red and blue; rubrics throughout.
Binding: s. xx. Quarter paper case.
Written in Italy in the second half of the 14th century; early
provenance unknown. Given to Yale in 1913 by the Yale Club of Boston.
