Roman numerals, in red, in upper left corner, verso), 375 x 253 (253 x 166) mm.
2 columns, 53 lines. Double outer and single inner vertical bounding lines;

Written in uniform gothic bookhand throughout; contemporary marginal notes
in several less formal hands.
8-line illuminated initial (f. 1r), blue with white highlights on square ground,
magenta with blue and white highlights; interior of initial inhabited by
scrolling vines, rabbit and two animal heads on gold and blue ground; tail
of letter extends down inner margin. 11- to 7-line red and blue initials
divided by a zig-zag line in parchment and with interior red and blue flourishes
resembling the design on a peacock's tail feathers, mostly in red with small
blue circles. This style of initial accompanied by long penwork extensions
in red and blue I designs and with small spirals, circles, flourishes (cf.
L'enluminure de Charlemagne a Francois I#e#r, Manuscrits de la
Bibliotheque
publique et universitaire de Geneve [Geneva, 1976] p. 43). Small 3-line
initials alternate red and blue with penwork flourishes in the opposite

Binding: France [?], s. xix. Brown calf, elaborately blind-stamped with
figure of Christ giving a blessing with his right hand, while his left hand
holds a book with alpha and omega displayed on the open pages. Original
endbands (and therefore sewing?) and yellow edges.
Written in Northern France at the end of the 13th or beginning of the 14th
century. According for H. Feiss the canons regulars of St. Victor in
Paris prepared or had prepared in the early 13th century a series of large
format, comprehensive manuscripts of Hugh's works, including Paris,
Bibliotheque Mazarine 717, Paris B. N. 14303 and 14506. Marston MS 248
appears to be descended from these three Victorine manuscripts. Two
contemporary inscriptions, effaced and only partially legible under ultra-violet
light: on blank parchment leaf pasted to front pastedown: "Iste liber
est * * * fratrum p [?]"; on the verso of pastedown, now lifted:
"Egidius familiaris d[o]mi Formulien[sis]." If the second reading is
accurate, Egidius may have been a member or associate of the canons regular
of the monastery of Sainte-Marie at Voormezele in West Flanders. Belonged
to Thomas Philip Earle de Grey of Wrest Park (1781-1859; bookplate) and to
Juan M. Sanchez (b. 1874; bookplate). Purchased from L. C. Witten in 1960 by
Thomas E. Marston (bookplate).
